His education was obtained at Oglethorpe University, The University of Pennsylvania, and a university in France. In 1846 he served as Asst. Surgeon U.S. Navy and remained in the service until the close of the Mexican-American War in 1848. He served as Mayor of Milledgeville, Ga in 1853 and 1854.
During the Civil War, he served as Surgeon in Cobb's Legion, Georgia Volunteers, 64th Regiment of Georgia Infantry, C.S.A., Army of Northern Virginia.
After the Civil War, he was president of the Milledgeville Asylum for the Insane.
