A graduate of Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. He and his family lived on a plantation, Brooklyne in Jones County, where he was a successful planter. He was Surgeon General of the Georgia State Troops during the Civil War. He also was one of the pioneers establishing the Hospital for the Insane in Milledgeville.
He did not want a gravestone and so his friends planted this oak as a headstone for his grave.
