Erected in 1868. It is one of the first such Confederate monuments in Georgia. It was erected to commemorate Confederate dead in general and, more specifically, to mark the graves of unknown Confederate soldiers buried here who had died in Brown Hospital in Milledgeville in 1864. Brown hospital was not a single building but a hospital spread over several buildings where the wounded could be treated.
Research in 2003 using the Southern Recorder newspaper of Sept 13, 1864 led to the discovery of the names of Confederate soldiers who died at Brown Hospital in Milledgeville. These soldiers died between July 9 and September 10, 1864 and have now been marked.
