Elizabeth Taylor Jordan

Aug 4, 1796 - June 4, 1858

This beautiful monument was created by Robert E. Launitz of New York who is known as “the Father of Monumental Art in America.” The marble is from Carrera, Italy. Carrera marble is a type of white or blue-gray marble perfect for carving. Many sculptures of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo's David (1501-04), were carved from Carrera marble.

There is much symbolism on this monument. Note the vine of morning glory and heart-shaped leaves with clinging tendrils and blooms. Morning glories bloom briefly and so represent the shortness of life. There is an anchor and rope, which represent hope in the future and the Christian hope of salvation; the anchor is also a form of cross. The finger pointing upwards signifies that the soul of the deceased has gone to its heavenly reward. Torches pointing down represent the extinguishing of life.
