Lamar enlisted in the Georgia Military Institute cadet corps June 15, 1864 at the age of 17. Five months later he was defending Milledgeville, along with two companies of cadets and some prisoners released from the Milledgeville State Penitentiary, against the army of General Sherman. Because of overwhelming odds, the cadets retreated from Milledgeville without offering resistance.
For forty years he was Steward of the State Sanitarium looking over the thousands of patients there. According to his obituary, he made It a point to go daily to the city stores and purchase scores of articles desired by patients who provided money for things that could not be obtained from the institution's warehouse.
