Susan Myrick

Feb 20, 1893 - Sep 3, 1978

Myrick was a remarkable woman who is best known for her role as technical adviser in Gone With the Wind. However, Myrick began her career as a teacher of physical education from 1911 to 1915 at her alma mater, Georgia Normal and Industrial College (now Georgia College). Later she wrote advice columns in the Macon Telegraph for teenagers who were too shy to ask their questions of their parents.

She became a full-time reporter for the Macon Telegraph starting in 1928 and remained associated with the paper for 50 years. Among her most memorable columns were those of 1939, when she became the technical adviser for the filming of Gone With the Wind. Author Margaret Mitchell recommended Myrick for the role in order to ensure that the movie portrayed the South corrrectly. Myrick advised on Southern manners and traditions during its filming, becoming known as the "Emily Post of the South."
