Pvt. Jemison's haunting photograph has become one of the best known portraits of a young soldier in the Civil War. He served in the 2nd Louisiana Volunteers. He was killed on the battlefield at Malvern Hill, Va. at age 17 and is buried in an unmarked grave.
To honor his memory his parents erected the tall marble monument in this, their family plot. The smaller, more modern, granite monument has his photograph.
His famed photograph is widely recognized but was only associated with Jemison in recent years.
